Irish Mindfulness Institute (IMI) vs. MTAI – Which Should I Choose?

We’re often asked whether the Irish Mindfulness Institute (IMI) or the Mindfulness Teachers Association of Ireland (MTAI) is “better.” The answer depends on your personal goals, location, and professional context.

What is MTAI?

MTAI is a professional membership association. It does not provide training itself but acts as a register of teachers who have completed approved training pathways, typically through Irish universities like UCD or international centers like Bangor or Oxford. Membership includes access to a professional network, CPD opportunities, and adherence to ethical standards within Ireland.

Think of MTAI like a professional guild or association for already-trained mindfulness teachers.

What is the Irish Mindfulness Institute?

The Irish Mindfulness Institute (IMI) is a training provider offering accessible and flexible professional pathways to become a qualified mindfulness teacher. IMI:

  • Is globally recognised by WAMBA (World Association for Mindfulness-Based Approaches)

  • Maintains its own teacher register

  • Offers a blended learning model ideal for adult learners, professionals, and those outside the university system

  • Issues certificates with regional branding (e.g., Irish, UK, Canadian) for students affiliated with its various institutes

How Do They Compare?

Feature IMI MTAI
Provides Training ✅ Yes ❌ No
Maintains Registry ✅ Yes (Own) ✅ Yes
Affiliated Body WAMBA (Global) Independent Irish Association
Ideal For Professionals, adults, global learners University-trained teachers in Ireland
Flexibility High (blended, online) Depends on prior training
Certification IMI Certificate N/A (only registers others’ certifications)

Which One Should I Choose?

  • If you want to train to become a mindfulness teacher in a flexible, internationally aligned system, IMI is likely a better fit.

  • If you’ve already trained via a university or BAMBA-accredited route and want to join a local Irish registry, MTAI may suit your needs.

In fact, some teachers train with IMI and also apply for MTAI membership later (if they meet the MTAI’s entry criteria). Others choose to remain solely on the IMI’s WAMBA-recognised registry, which provides global credibility.
